Family violence as a social determinant of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis health

January 2009

Family violence is recognized as an important health issue in many Aboriginal communities. It is strongly linked with other social determinants of health, including living conditions, poverty, employment, culture, and education. This fact sheet examines the factors that contribute to family violence in Aboriginal communities and the impacts of family violence to health and well-being. It calls for a holistic and multi-sectoral approach to reducing the risk factors for family violence in these communities.
