This discussion paper aims to inform the development of a comprehensive set of indicators to define and track child and youth health and well-being in British Columbia. It identifies major modifiable factors and conditions that enhance health and well-being in young people and makes recommendations for specific criteria for establishing indicators for child and youth health in BC. The authors propose an integrated framework for predicting child and youth well-being based on four theoretical approaches to understanding children's healthy development: integrated systems theory, a theory of the health and well-being of vulnerable children based on resiliency and protective factors, a strengths-based perspective, and a social structure and determinants of child health perspective.
